When designing your home office, the first thing you need to do is determine where the office will be located. When working from home it’s important to choose a location where you won’t constantly be distracted. If possible, choose a room with a door that can be closed if necessary. If you do not have the luxury of having a separate room for your home office, at the very least use some type of room divider or screen to block off your office space.

Your home office should have enough space for a desk or computer workstation, chair, office equipment, and some type of storage. Depending upon the type of work you are performing, you may require a filing cabinet or other storage unit. You might also need a stand for your printer, copier and/or fax machine.

At minimum, your home office desk should be large enough to accommodate a desktop computer or laptop. If you will be working from your home office on a full time basis, it’s best to have a regular office desk as opposed to a computer workstation. This type of desk provides additional surface space so you can easily place filing trays and other essential desk accessories within reach. This type of desk generally has drawers and a place to store your computer tower.

A durable and comfortable chair is a must-have in your home office. Invest in a high-quality, ergonomically-correct chair. A home office chair should have a comfortable seat cushion, good lumbar support, and armrests. Your feet should fit firmly on the floor while seated at your desk. The chair should fit well, with room to spare, into the desk opening. If you plan to move about the room on the chair, choose a swivel chair that easily rolls across the floor. If you have carpet, you will need to purchase an office chair mat or special casters that allow chairs to easily roll over carpet.

You will also need shelving for reference books and to display collectibles and personal items. Built-in bookshelves are the best option, but you can also use an armoire, entertainment center, or milk crates. Modular storage units come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors and are a good option for additional storage.
